If you ask someone in Hollywood to "name their poison," they will probably come back with Botox, the bacterium that causes Botulism. But, for men and women fighting wrinkles it is the nectar of the gods and lots of Hollywood stars are using it. Health editor Diana Penna shows us how it works.

These injections will paralyze certain muscles in Debra Santopil's face. The purpose is to help smooth out lines and eventually prepare for laser resurfacing.

Dr. Ron Shelton / Plastic Surgeon: "When we do the laser resurfacing and the patient heals, they're healing over a smoother blanket and the final result will be better."

Dr. Ron Shelton, a New York City Cosmetic Surgeon, is injecting Botox into Debra's face. Neurologists have used the protein for decades to help stroke patients, but plastic surgeons are starting to use it as well.

Botox is not permanent the results last for about 2 to 5 months. However, the more often a patient has treatments the muscle will start to re-train itself and the effects last longer.

There can be some side effects with Botox. For example, some people can bruise from the needle. The eyelid can lower just a little bit, but that is temporary. In addition, because Botox in effect paralyzes the muscle, it is not recommended to be used around the mouth because it can effect speech.

Debra has had several Botox treatments. It all started out with headaches she was experiencing between her eyes.

There is a stinging sensation from the needle and certain parts of the face are more sensitive then others.

Debra Santopil / Botox Patient: "To relax that, Dr. Shelton recommended the Botox and it also took away deep lines I had between my eyes and from there had my forehead done."

Dr. Ron Shelton / Plastic Surgeon: "The excessive muscles will no longer be able to do this, but Debra will certainly be able to close her eyes."
